The City of San Jose is the safest big city in the country, the tenth largest city in the U.S. and the third largest city in
California, it is also one of the most expensive areas in which to live in the U.S. With a population of nearly one million,
the Mayor and City Council continues to demonstrate its commitment to affordable housing and to the residents of this community.
San Jose is proud to be California’s Leader in Affordable Housing
outpacing San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento. Since 1988, San Jose has built, rehabilitated and financed over 21,000 units of newly-affordable
housing.
The City and its partners work to provide safe, decent, affordable Housing and Transit
Oriented Development along corridors. Over 70% of building permits issued since 1999 were for housing units within walking distance
to mass transit.
The Housing Statistics Report provides data regarding rental and ownership housing market in San Jose and Santa Clara County. Trends tracked in the report include median sale prices of homes, average rental rates, interest rates, etc. This information is made available as an effort to educate the San Jose community on the facts about the local housing market.
The Department maintains a wide variety of special data related both to the City of San Jose as a whole, and specifically to the projects and activities undertaken by the City. The data include general statistics on the City of San Jose, profiles of the housing market and housing needs data, income eligibility criteria, the cost of housing in San Jose, and statistics on the City’s housing production activities.
